TPS wins contract with Bombardier Transportation (BT) to provide Auxiliary Power Supply units for London Underground (LU)

Auxiliary Power Supply

Bombardier Transportation (BT), Sweden has placed a multi-million pound order with TPS to provide Auxiliary Power Supply (APS) equipment for 680 cars of London Underground’s Central Line.

TPS’s scope is to design and supply a cutting edge, innovative, efficient and compact APS system that will enable BT to deliver a high-quality traction system for LU. The technology embedded in these Auxiliary Power Supply units will significantly improve energy efficiency of the trains and reduce the total cost of ownership for LU.

A pioneer in Rail Power Electronics, TPS have been awarded a multi-million pound contract by BT to design and supply a new APS system for Central Line’s fleet. The scope of work is to design, manufacture and supply APS equipment for 680 cars and this contract will run until 2024.

Housed in a compact, under-floor mounted enclosure, all APS components are naturally cooled and require minimum maintenance. The equipment is designed for increased availability and can withstand severe rail environment, such as extreme temperatures, space constraints and high vibration. TPS’ auxiliary power units are built with an intelligent monitoring system that records events and conditions sent by the control system. These units also come with portable test equipment software which enables the train maintainer to easily diagnose the system from their laptop.

The APS units also incorporate an innovative DC-DC Power Module using cutting edge Silicon Carbide (SiC) technology which can sustain much higher voltages and can be switched at a much higher frequency, hence equipment can be made smaller with improved reliability.

Carlos Neves, Chief Executive Officer of TPS, commented:

“I am extremely pleased that after 2 years of a true collaboration effort between TPS and Bombardier we won this significant project with London Underground. This contract proves that our sustainable investment on R&D in innovative technologies was adequate and allows us to fully demonstrate our capabilities. The long-term goal for TPS is to exceed expectations developing innovative and sustainable solutions that, in this case, will help BT and LU to reduce carbon footprint and minimise the energy used by the Tube network.”

Shortlisting in 5 categories for TPS at UKRIA 2018 Awards!

TPS shortlist UKRIA 2018

Our intelligent solutions have been shortlisted in 5 categories at UK Rail Industry Awards this year: Cost Base Reduction, Environmental & Sustainability, Design Innovation, Traction & Rolling Stock and Product Innovation

2018 Shortlistings for the UK Rail Industry Awards (UKRIA) have been announced! During this distinguished awards ceremony, UKRIA aims to select and bring together the most important players within the UK rail industry.

The event acknowledges exceptional achievements of different companies, teams and individuals that are continuously striving to deliver  innovative solutions to the UK rail network.

UKRIA 2018 winners will be announced on the 22nd of March at the Battersea Evolution in London.

Due to our reliable and efficient Static Converter, TPS have been shortlisted in three categories this year: Cost Base Reduction, Environmental Sustainability and Traction & Rolling Stock. Our converter could potentially bring significant savings to the fleet operator. This product can increase energy efficiency and could lead to energy savings of over 4kW per journey compared to a motor alternator (MA) set. Please click here to download our static converter datasheet.

Our successful DC-DC power module has been shortlisted in the Product Innovation category. TPS’ innovative 100kW DC-DC power module is incorporated into power conversion systems and it uses cutting edge Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFETs in its design. This way, the power module ensures highest levels of efficiency for power conversion and provides a robust galvanic isolation from input to output, thus protecting other equipment within the environment. This product has been awarded “Power Systems of 2016” within the renowned Elektra Awards ceremony.

TPS have been shortlisted in the Design Innovation category for the innovative, compact and highly efficient At-Seat Power Supply that provides reliable power to passengers to charge their laptops, tablets and mobile phones.

Join us on the 22nd March to celebrate all projects that have been shortlisted at UKRIA this year and for the announcement of winners – it will certainly be a memorable night!
