Turbo Power Systems (TPS) has received a highly commended certificate in the Environment Category at the Railway Industry Innovation Awards 2018. This certificate was received for TPS’s ground-breaking and ultra-efficient DC-DC Power Module.
The Rolling Stock (railway vehicle) market is craving for compact, light-weight, reliable, efficient and greener power conversion systems. To this effect, TPS’s DC-DC module was designed to develop the next generation of innovative power conversion equipment that will achieve all the above-mentioned goals.
One of the main power conversion equipment in the rail vehicle is an Auxiliary Power Supply Unit (APU). TPS has been designing these APUs for over 30 years and its core objective is to solve the power conversion needs of other equipment installed on board a rail vehicle.
TPS’s APU unit consists of three stages namely the input stage, the conversion stage, and the output stage. They are designed to take voltage from multiple power sources such as overhead line, 3rd rail, diesel-electric engine and batteries. Once these sources are connected, the APUs convert them to a stable and clean supply for use by on-board and utility equipment such as air conditioning compressors, brake compressors, lighting, passenger information systems, at seat sockets, microwave, fridge etc.
TPS’s DC-DC Power Module is designed using cutting-edge Silicon Carbide (SiC) components and is incorporated into the input stage of the APU. These SiC components operate at a higher switching frequency than standard silicon components resulting in size and weight reductions and reduced losses (i.e. higher efficiency). The DC-DC Power Module also provide galvanic isolation between input and output supply thereby ensuring protection for other equipment within the environment.
There are very few companies that are at the forefront of research in the application of SiCs and TPS will be one of the pioneers to effectively use this technology for the Rolling Stock market.
The applications for this DC-DC technology is multi-faceted and can be used in Transportation and Energy markets in the form of power converters, electric vehicle chargers, battery chargers, photovoltaic systems and isolated power transfer for electricity distribution.
As we continuously strive to exceed expectations by developing innovative and sustainable solutions, being highly commended is a recognition of TPS’s credibility and efforts in the power electronics field.
Other awards and shortlists for DC-DC Power Module were in prestigious events such as Elektra Awards 2016 and UKRIA 2018.
